Parents’/Caregivers’/Families’ Role in Keeping Schools Safe

  1. Screen each child for symptoms EVERY morning

Use our pre-screening checklist to see if your child has any of the listed symptoms

  • Fever (temperature of 37.8°C or greater)
  • Cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sore throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain
  • Runny nose or nasal congestion
  • Red eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Not feeling well, tired or sore muscles
  • Chills or headache
  • Lethargy, loss of energy, loss of appetite
  • Been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or experiencing the symptoms of COVID-19
  • Within the last 14 days, been in close contact with someone who returned from travel outside of Canada*

If the answer is “yes” to any ONE of the questions, your child must stay home from school. Families should contact their health care provider or one of the Waterloo region Community Assessment Centres to inquire about testing.

2. Stay home when sick or if in contact with someone who is sick

3. Maintain physical distance between you and others when possible:

  • During drop off and pick up
  • When interacting with others outside of your bubble
  • Pick up students promptly if you are notified that your child is showing symptoms at school:
  • Please ensure that the school has up-to-date contact information. Alternative contacts should not be in at-risk or vulnerable populations.

For anyone who is showing any signs or symptoms of COVID-19, Public Health recommends that you complete an online self-assessment. The assessment will connect you with a medical professional, if necessary. You may also contact your primary care provider for more information. Families must notify their child’s school that they are showing signs or symptoms of COVID-19.

If students present with even ONE of the above symptoms while at school, the school will call you to pick up your child (and siblings). You will be advised to complete the Region of Waterloo Self Assessment once home and follow the recommended actions.
