Hello Cool Cat Families,

Halloween is coming up and this cultural event is a good reminder for us to continue to promote a safe, caring and inclusive school community, and is an opportunity to talk to students about respecting identity. Like many annual traditions, this day can be filled with excitement, however, we want to make sure our Halloween activities foster a climate of inclusion, support the ongoing commitment to school spirit, and observe Public Health recommendations in mitigating potential risks related to the COVID- 19 Pandemic.

We live in a very diverse community and this celebration lends itself to teaching students about inclusion and human rights. Not all families celebrate Halloween, for many reasons including cultural, religious, socioeconomic and personal. Although this can be a great teaching opportunity to raise awareness of this cultural event among those unfamiliar with its origins, the spirit of inclusion also means respect for the decision of those who choose not to participate in these activities.

From the beginning of the year, the Health & Safety of our school community has been a primary focus for all our students, staff and families. Routines have been established in classrooms and at school in an effort to keep everyone safe. Through this vigilance, students have enjoyed a remarkable return to school and are benefiting from this hard work.  Disruptions to routines and safety practices are risks we cannot afford to take.

Costumes and shared food, often associated with Halloween, are incompatible with the guidance we have shared with schools. Departure from this guidance is inconsistent with the promise we have made to families to provide a safe learning environment for all students.

If you so choose, children may come to school wearing orange, purple, and black, however, please do not send your children to school on October 30th in a costume or with Halloween accessories or props.  In addition, please do not send treats or anything for your child to share with the class.

Thank you for your understanding.

Let’s continue to create an environment where every child feels included, safe, valued, and treated with dignity
