Hello, Cool Cat Families!

I want to recognize that today is the 2nd Annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Coronation is a sea of orange today as we recognize Orange Shirt Day. This morning on the announcements, students heard about Phyllis Webstad, residential school survivor and the creator of Orange Shirt Day. When Phyllis was six years old, she proudly wore her new orange shirt to her first day of school at St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in British Columbia. When Phyllis arrived, her orange shirt was taken away from her and never returned. Phyllis encourages us to wear orange today to educate people about residential schools and share the important message that Every Child Matters.

We will be holding an October drive in support of www.truenorthaid.ca, an organization that supports Northern Canadians with practical humanitarian support.

We will be collecting menstrual products for northern communities in Ontario, Quebec and Nunavut. If you would like to donate to our drive, we will be collecting menstrual pads, tampons, cloth pads, hot water bottles, and heating pads during the month of October. These items can be dropped off outside the main office.

A couple notes from the office:

There are many special events to recognize throughout the school year and your child’s birthday is one of those days. In the past, some families have sent treats to be shared with the class. For equity reasons, allergies and in following the nutritional standards for healthy eating outlined in Canada’s Food Guide, we ask that families not send treats for birthdays or special events. We appreciate your cooperation with this. If there are any questions, please feel free to contact the office.

Picture Day is coming! October 21st, individual photos will be taken. All students and staff will have their photos taken. No money or orders will be collected until AFTER PICTURE DAY. Proofs will be then sent home to families and orders can be made online. All students, whether they’re purchasing photos or not, will receive a class composite photo at no charge. This composite will replace class photos. Click here to see an example of a class composite. Each child will be “featured” on their personal class composite.

Thank you to those that have already reached out indicating their interest in becoming a volunteer with our School Council. Our first meeting on October 12th. It will be in person, beginning at 6:00 PM in the library at Coronation. We will also have a virtual option for those parents that are interested in attending virtually. This virtual link will be shared next week in our Friday letter to families. If you are interested in volunteering, please email jenni-rebecca_baer@wrdsb.ca or cor@wrdsb.ca to submit your name and we will contact you next week with more details.
