Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) is deeply saddened by the passing of Trustee Fred Meissner. Trustee Meissner was an exemplary board member who sat on multiple committees. His passion and dedication to improving public education in the region was second to none. His priority was always students, their success and well-being, and his commitment to them was boundless.

Known affectionately by some at the board as The Fred Meissner, he was a beloved educator who had a long history of teaching, leading, and most importantly, caring about the students he served. He was widely recognized by students and residents in his home community and was passionate about giving back to kids and the community he loved so much.

Trustee Meissner joined the Board of Trustees in October 2022 and quickly established himself as a committed and thoughtful member of the Board governance team. As a Trustee, he advocated passionately for inclusive, accessible and safe classrooms and schools. He prioritized student voice and engaging families, caregivers and others with a vested interest in developing an effective educational experience for all students. Trustee Meissner always acknowledged staff and education workers for their valuable contributions both in and out of the classroom and was committed to working with them for a better and more inclusive education system.

Trustee Meissner’s roots at the WRDSB were deep. Prior to being elected, he spent 27 years as an educator at Elmira District Secondary School where he worked in both the English and Special Education departments until his retirement in 2018.

Our most heartfelt condolences go out to Fred’s family at this difficult time. To honour Trustee Fred Meissner and his exceptional contributions, flags across the WRDSB will be flown at half-mast from today until his funeral has taken place.
