Good Morning Coronation Families,

We hope you are keeping warm and dry as we head into the colder weeks of November. With snow, rain, and icy weather becoming more common, we ask families to help students come to school dressed for the changing conditions. Warm coats, hats, mittens, and waterproof boots are important for outdoor play. Please also make sure your child has indoor shoes at school each day to help keep our classrooms clean and safe.

If your child needs any winter clothing, we have warm items available through the office — please don’t hesitate to reach out and we’ll be happy to help.

Last week Coronation was busy with both safety learning and community building. Students took part in our annual school bus evacuation drills to practise what to do in case of an emergency. Last week our Fire Drill was postponed due to rain. We will reschedule this for the coming weeks and will update families with our new date.

Last week also had the opportunity to welcome three WRDSB System Navigators into our building. They walked through the school, visited classrooms, and met with staff to learn more about how we build a welcoming and inclusive school environment. After their visit, they shared very positive feedback with their supervisor, describing Coronation as one of the most relational and inclusive schools they’ve visited. It was a proud moment for our community, and we’re grateful to staff and students for showing such kindness and openness to our guests.

As part of Take Our Kids to Work Day, we were also happy to welcome Jackson Hart, a Grade 9 student and the son of Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Prickett-Hart. Jackson spent the day learning alongside his mother and even brought in his drone to demonstrate how it works to the class. It was a great opportunity for students to learn about new technology — and for Jackson to experience a day in the life at Coronation.

Thank you to all families who have already placed their school photo orders. If you have not yet submitted your order, please note that the deadline is today. If you would like a retake because your child was absent or you would like a different pose, please note that our retakes are happening on November 19th

Kindergarten Vision Screening

A reminder that Kindergarten students will take part in vision screening next week. This screening is provided at school and helps identify early vision needs that may impact learning. Details have been shared with families. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the main office.

Staying Connected to the Community

If your family is part of a community group, event, or initiative you’d like us to know about, we’d love to hear from you. While we may not be able to attend every event, we value opportunities to learn more about what matters to our families and to stay connected to the broader community.

Student Clubs at Coronation

We’re excited to see so many students engaged in a wide range of clubs during the school day. These opportunities help build confidence, friendships, and a strong sense of belonging. Current club offerings include:

  • Langs Lunch & Games Club Grade 3/4, 5/6
  • Basketball Club – Grade 4, 5/6
  • Comic Book Club- Grade 4,5,6
  • Animal Club Grade -4,5,6
  • Announcement Helpers – Grade 6
  • Lunch Helpers – Grade 5/6
  • Recycling Crew- Grade 5/6

We’re grateful to our staff and community partners for supporting these activities and creating meaningful ways for students to get involved.

Immunization Letters from Public Health

Some families may have received immunization letters sent home this week. These letters are from Region of Waterloo Public Health and are part of their responsibility to review and update student vaccination records under the Immunization of School Pupils Act.

If you received a letter, it means Public Health does not currently have a complete vaccine record or valid exemption on file for your child. Families are asked to visit regionofwaterloo.ca/vaccines or scan the QR code included in the letter to update their child’s immunization information. Please note: health care providers do not report vaccine records automatically — it is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to report this information directly to Public Health.

If you have questions or need support, please contact Region of Waterloo Public Health directly at the number listed in the letter.

Remembrance Day Assembly – November 11 at 9:15 a.m.

We will be holding our school-wide Remembrance Day Assembly tomorrow morning, beginning at 9:15 a.m. This will be an opportunity for students and staff to come together in reflection and respect, as we honour those who have served and continue to serve in times of war, conflict, and peace.

Due to the size of our gym, this event is not open to the wider community, and invitations have only been extended to families of students who are performing in the assembly. We thank you for your understanding.

Principal Coverage

Beginning Monday, November 25, I will be taking a medical leave with intentions to return in the new year. During my absence, Heather Kruis will be serving as the Principal at Coronation. Heather has supported Coronation during my previous absences and I’m confident the school will be in excellent hands during this time.

School Council Update

We are grateful to all the families who joined us for last week’s School Council meeting. It was a thoughtful and productive discussion. We always welcome new family and community members to participate in upcoming meetings and events. Our next in-person meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the Coronation library.

One of our current priorities is supporting our upcoming Family Movie Night on Friday, November 21, featuring the Lilo & Stitch remake. This event is open to all Coronation families and is organized in partnership with School Council.

Family Movie Night Details

  • Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
  • Movie begins at 6:00 p.m.
  • $20 Family Pass: includes admission, one bag of popcorn, and one medium cheese pizza from Domino’s (available for School-Day purchase only; pizza must be pre-ordered)
  • $10 Family Pass: includes admission and one bag of popcorn (available in advance or at the door)
  • Additional snacks and popcorn will be available for purchase

Families are reminded that shoes must remain on at all times in the gym, and the space should be treated like a movie theatre. Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and families are expected to supervise children during the event, including washroom visits. Running or playing in the gym during the movie will not be permitted.

Looking ahead, School Council is also preparing for our Holiday Store, which gives students a chance to “shop” for small gifts for family and friends during the month of December. Donations of gently used items (such as books, mugs, puzzles, small toys, jewelry, or household items) will be accepted during the first week of December. More information will be shared in the coming weeks.

Finally, School Council has also been listening to feedback from staff and families about club opportunities at Coronation. While many junior students are already participating in lunchtime clubs, we know that our younger students are eager for more. We’re happy to share that Council will be partnering with school staff to offer a Grade 1–2 craft club in the new year. Thank you to the Council members who are helping to support this opportunity.
