Good Morning Coronation Families,

I hope the weekend was good to everyone, and that today’s PD Day provided a meaningful and refreshing shift in routine.

I’d like to begin my letter today with a message about a change within our staff team. Mrs. Nogueira (Mrs. N), Coronation’s library clerk is leaving Coronation next week to begin a Library Clerk position at Willow Creek, a move that brings her much closer to home. While we are excited for her new opportunity, her absence will certainly be felt throughout our school. Mrs. N has brought so much joy and connection to Coronation — from dance parties at Nutrition Break to dressing up as a “special visitor” during our Spirit Assemblies, to being a trusted and caring adult for so many of our students. We are incredibly grateful for the energy, kindness, and love she has shared with our community. She will be deeply missed. We will take time this week to celebrate her and to wish her well on her next chapter. Once a Cool Cat, always a Cool Cat.

As November settles in, the weather is becoming wetter, colder, and a little less predictable. We kindly ask families to help students come prepared for outdoor learning and play by sending warm layers such as coats, hats, mittens, and waterproof boots. Indoor shoes are also needed each day so classrooms stay clean and safe for everyone. Coronation’s playground on the lower campus is now closed for the season. At this time, the hills are also off-limits for sliding during Nutrition Break until we have a significant amount of snow to protect the grass from damage. If your child could use any winter gear, please connect with the office. We have a selection of cozy items available and are always glad to support our students.

Messages from the Office

Progress Reports and Kindergarten Communication of Learning

Coronation teachers have been hard at work preparing Progress Reports and Kindergarten Communication of Learning Reports. These are now complete and will be coming home to families on November 18.

Progress Reports give teachers an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate each student’s growth and to share next steps for learning with families. It is important to remember that the Progress Report is not an achievement report. It describes a student’s development of learning skills and work habits during the fall term as well as the student’s general progress toward the end-of-year curriculum expectations in all subject areas.

Kindergarten Reports provide families with an overview of initial observations of each child’s learning. They include early evidence of growth in relation to the overall expectations in The Kindergarten Program (2016) and offer information about next steps to support continued learning.

We encourage families to read the report carefully, and to read it together with their child. This can be a meaningful way to talk about strengths, next steps, and personal learning goals. If you have any questions, concerns, or would like clarification, please connect with your child’s classroom educators. They are always happy to support your child’s learning journey.

Correction: Dental Screening for Kindergarten and Grade 2 Students

Last week, I shared information about upcoming vision screening. This was an error, and I want to clarify the correct details.

Dental screening will take place at school on Tuesday for Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten, and Grade 2 students. Grade 1 students are not included in this screening. This is a routine school-based service that helps identify early dental needs that may impact overall health and learning.

Vision screening does occur later in the school year, and we will provide information to families at that time.

If you have any questions or need further information, please reach out to the main office.

Home Reading Update

The WRDSB is currently revising its Home Reading procedure with a renewed focus on fostering a love of reading. The goal of Home Reading is to help children enjoy books, spend meaningful time reading with family members, and build positive reading habits. Research shows that when Home Reading is centred on enjoyment and connection, it supports long-term literacy development. When it focuses too heavily on reading only levelled texts, it can sometimes have the opposite effect.

In alignment with this updated direction, Coronation is in the process of reorganizing our Home Reading materials. Our new approach will give students more choice based on their interests rather than assigning books according to a specific reading level. We want Home Reading to feel joyful, inviting, and accessible for every learner.

We know that some families have been asking about Home Reading and wondering about changes this year. Thank you for your patience as we complete this transition. We will be sharing more details soon about what Home Reading will look like at Coronation moving forward.

If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to reach out to your child’s classroom educator.

Remembrance Day Assembly

Thank you to all of the students who performed at our Remembrance Day Assembly last week. Their confidence, respect, and thoughtful contributions made the morning meaningful for our entire school community.

A special thank you to Mme. Greenwood, Mrs. Green, and Mrs. Harrington for their work in preparing and leading this important event. We also extend our appreciation to the families who were able to join us.

We were so impressed with how smoothly our students transitioned from the high-energy spirit of our earlier assembly to the calm, reflective tone needed for our Remembrance Day gathering. Their ability to adjust and show such respect made us very proud.

Staying Connected to the Community

If your family is part of a community group, event, or initiative you’d like us to know about, we’d love to hear from you. While we may not be able to attend every event, we value opportunities to learn more about what matters to our families and to stay connected to the broader community.
