Hello Coronation families,

I hope that you’ve been enjoying a wonderful long weekend with loved ones. We look forward to starting the school week with hot temperatures and cooling down to Spring-like temperatures later in the week. Messages from the Office

Extreme Temperatures

With the warm weather expected to continue this week, we’re keeping student and staff well-being at the centre of our decisions.
While some of our school is air conditioned, it will still feeling warm indoors. We will be encouraging students to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and take it easy during outdoor breaks. We will encourage students to stick to the shaded areas of our property as much as possible and limit high energy activities.

We will follow the WRDSB’s Responding to Extreme Heat Conditions procedures and will adjust our plans as needed each day.

Staffing Update

We have recently had some changes with some of our staff. We want to wish Mrs T. (EA) and Mrs Hoff (DECE) the very best and look forward to seeing them both again in September. We welcome Ms Keffler and Miss Dedman as replacements for the remainder of the year.

We also want to thank Mrs Bathla (EA) for her time at Coronation and wish her well as she goes forward in her career as an educator.

Belonging and Connection: Takeaways from Michael and Marcel Jacques

This past week, we were incredibly fortunate to welcome author and advocate, Michael Jacques and his father, Marcel, to Coronation. They spent time with our whole school. They shared important messages about making sure every single student feels included and welcome, especially during Nutrition Breaks.

Michael and Marcel spoke to our staff about the big impact all school staff and educators have on students. They also met with families to talk about how we can work together to support students. When they spoke to our students, they talked about what it means to be a good friend.

Here are the main ideas from their presentation that we are practicing at school. We encourage you to talk about these with your child(ren) at home:

Fun Over Winning First, Nutrition Break is about having fun, moving around, and getting fresh air together. It is not about the final score of a game. Whether students are playing soccer, tag, or using the creative playgrounds, the goal is to have fun together, not to win.

Everyone Deserves a Friend, Michael and Marcel reminded us that everyone deserves a friend, always. No one should ever be left out on our school yard.

Our School Rules for Equipment, This fits perfectly with what Coronation educators talk about every day. To make sure our yard is a place where everyone belongs, we follow three clear rules when using school play equipment:

  • The answer is always yes, If someone asks to join a game, we say yes. We never leave anyone out.
  • Use fair strategies, If there is a disagreement, we use a fair way to solve it together.
  • Walk away when it stops being fun, If a game is no longer fun, any student can choose to walk away and find something else to do.

Thank you to Michael and Marcel for helping us make Coronation a place where every student feels seen and valued.

What School Staff Are Learning on the May 29 PD Day

Friday, May 29, 2026, is a professional development (PD) day for elementary school staff.

Students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 will not attend school, in person or virtually

Students in Grades 9 to 12 will attend school on their regular schedule

All Board-operated Extended Day Programs will operate at reduced hours from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

PD days are held throughout the school year to provide learning opportunities for school-based staff. This professional learning focuses on providing educators and staff with the knowledge and skills needed to support and enhance student achievement and well being.

Extended Day Registration opens Tomorrow!

Registration for Before and After School Programs operated by the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) will open on May 19, 2026.

Starting in the 2026-27 school year, registrations will be assessed using a new priority criteria. If your child is currently enrolled in a Before and After School Program for the 2025–2026 school year (as of May 1, 2026) and you register between May 19 and May 29, 2026, your registration will be considered in the priority placement.

They have also introduced several improvements to the registration process based on feedback from parents, families and caregivers, including a new online registration system; easier sibling registration; and enhanced communication about space availability. More information about the registration process, eligibility, and what to expect is available on the WRDSB website: https://wrdsb.social/4naATKf

Two Fire Drills this Week

Due to poor weather, we previously cancelled two fire drills this school year.

We have rescheduled them for Tuesday and Friday mornings this week.

Cell Phone and Smartwatch Policy & Items from Home

Please remind children that carry a cell phone, smartwatch or other electronic device, that it must be powered off when arriving at school. We encourage students to bring these items to the Office to be kept in a locked box during the school day. Students who leave their devices in the school office may pick them up following dismissal from class.
This is just a reminder that Coronation is not responsible for items from home that are lost or damaged at school.
